‘The Ultimate Food Experience’

So you finally decided to travel and, full of excitement, you get yourself a ticket… For some of us however, as we get closer to departure, we become aware of a small voice beginning to mutter uncertainties in our ear and the headache that is anxiety creeps in…

What am I going to eat? Is the food good there? Is it healthy? Is it even clean - do I avoid the salad? What if it causes me stomach problems? What about my diet restrictions – what if there’s nothing I can have?!

Nobody wants the stress of worrying about food on their travels, it could even be viewed as a big part of the adventure, so let’s talk about your options regarding food when you travel…

The destination of course is going to dictate your options, and the types of foods and variety which is available, but don’t forget that with the rise of the Internet, more and more holiday destinations have access to, and are therefore able to offer you, more familiar choices.

Here are 10 tips for you, my fellow travelers, that will help you master your fears and have the ultimate food experience:

1. Exploring local street food:

Sampling local street food can be an exciting way to experience a new culture and cuisine. Be adventurous and try some of the unique offerings, such as kebabs, samosas, or tacos. Street food is always the most direct way to introduce yourself into the daily life of your new destination.

2. Visiting local markets:

Local markets are a great place to explore and sample fresh produce, spices, and other unique ingredients. Take time to wander through the stalls and speak to the vendors to learn about the region's culinary traditions, find out what’s available and might suit you.

3. Dining at local restaurants:

Eating at a local restaurant can be a fantastic way to experience the local cuisine. Look for places that are popular with the locals, or that specialize in a particular regional dish. Trip Advisor could also provide you with reviews of these restaurants, even from people from your own country which can be a very helpful way to gauge which is best for you. *Always keep in mind that the commentary on these reviews are subject to each individuals experience and they shouldn’t dictate your opinion. You will need to be open minded and form your own idea about that experience.

4. Sampling traditional dishes:

Don't be afraid to try traditional dishes that may be unfamiliar. These dishes are often steeped in history and culture, and can provide a fascinating insight into the local way of life.

5. Trying local beverages:

Sampling local beverages such as wine, beer, or tea, can be a fun and interesting way to experience a new destination. Many regions have their own unique beverages that are worth trying.

6. Take a cooking class:

Taking a cooking class can be a great way to learn about a new cuisine and allow you to bring traditional flavors and techniques back home with you. Look for classes that focus on local ingredients and recipes. The easiest way to get introduced into these classes can be through your Hotel’s reception, your tour guide, or even just by browsing the net to find what’s available.

7. Attending a food festival:

Food festivals are a great way to sample a wide range of local dishes and beverages in one place. Look for festivals that focus on a particular ingredient or cuisine, or that are held in a unique setting. This is also an amazing way to get to know the place’s music tradition as the local artists can often be found performing there. It’s always fascinating to combine local food and local music for full cultural flavour!

8. Exploring food markets:

Many cities have food markets that are worth exploring. These markets often feature a wide range of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to artisanal cheeses and meats.

9. Meeting local producers:

Meeting local producers such as cheese makers, wine makers, or farmers can be a great way to learn about the local food culture and taste some of the region's best offerings.

10. Going on a food tour:

For those of you really wanting to make food part of the adventure, food tours are a great way to explore a new destination while sampling its culinary delights. Look for tours that take you off the beaten track to discover hidden gems and local specialties.

There are so many ways to experience the cuisine of a new place, so instead of worrying about what you’re going to eat, make exploring food part of the journey. Your mouth can have up to around 8,000 taste buds. Give them all what they deserve and offer them new and exciting flavors to remember.
